It lies on the south bank of the Missouri River, near the western edge of the state and lies within Jackson County, of which it is the county seat. Independence is now the fourth-largest city in Missouri. The Truman Presidential Library and Museum is located in the city, and Truman and First Lady Bess Truman are buried here.
